Just ranting about the little boy's school

I am truly disappointed with my son's preschool. Haayy... I have actually been contemplating and thinking last year pa whether to send him to a progressive school but since sending him to a progressive school would require getting a service or somebody to bring him there and take him home as there's no progressive school near our place. I think the nearest is Second Mom which would require service as both hubby and I are working. We've decided to enroll him in the neighborhood school since it is his first time to go to school, so we thought that sending him there is the best choice kasi walking distance lang so di sya mahihirapan mag-adjust. H's currently 3.5 yrs. old and I never actually saw the importance of sending him to school last year as he has a lot of people to interact with at home eh for me, sending a child to school early (eg. 2 yrs old) is only necessary for the socialization aspect.

So what are my frustrations? it's too traditional!! napipikon ako actually. First, was about the comment that my son doesn't know how to color properly when in fact he's only one month in school so honestly, I wouldn't expect him to master that. We let him color at home pero we don't pressure him to make it perfect. When I saw the workbook, honestly for me, the way he colors is what is expected of his age BUT his teacher thinks otherwise. Second, just today, my MIL told me that the teacher told the helper, who stays in the class to wait for the little boy, that the little boy doesn't know how to write letter "B". Again!! I am so pikon, why? at Nursery ba it is expected for them to know these things already? Sobrang old school na ba ko? Eh honestly, sobrang bilib pa ako sa little boy when I saw one of his workbook last weekend. I was a bit surprised and happy that he's studying and knows na the following:

- big and small
- over and under
- the same and different
- identifying patterns

Now, I really want him to move to a new school. Why? kasi ayokong as young and early as know eh maka-feel na sya ng pressure in schooling or worse inferiority complex as I remember the last time I visited the school eh merong pinapagalitan ang teacher kasi hindi pa marunong and I am not the only one who witnessed that, even MIL overheard the teacher na may pinapagalitang kinder kasi hindi pa rin sya natututo. I don't want that for my son! he's too young for that. It's his first time to go to school and he's only nursery, are they really required to know how to write the ABC already? And medyo parang lalo pa kong nainis kasi kitang-kita how traditional the school is by the sequence of letters taught, it is alphabetical. In Kumon workbook kasi, they start with the simple letters like I, T, L, E then goes harder and harder.

I really don't know what to do. I want him out of that school but can we find another school that will accept him this late? and what are our options? how can I convince the husband about this as he doesn't seemed bothered at all.

I am so worried that I can't concentrate on my own studying. Help mommies please!! I am on a big dilemma that I sometimes now feel bad and guilty that I am working and ngayon pa, studying so lesser time to teach the little boy.

grabe naman yang etacher and yang school na ayn! kaya nga nasa school ang bata para matuto diba???? and i agree with you, suepr traditional naman!!!! at 3.5, same age pala sila ni sophia.... my daughter doenst know how to write letter B all on her own too na walang kinokopyahan or little help noh. and i dont think they are expected to know that right now....nahigh blood ako sa post mo hahaha. kase ang pangit pag negative ang approach ng teacher saying na di marunong si littkle boy mo to do this that etc....sa school nila sophia, i must admit not purely progressive but mi sila and im okay naman with it. and ive never heard any bad or negative feedback from the teacher parating postive saying they are still too young and im sure in time they'll master this and that etc....

hay, better look for another school.

nakakainis nga yang school ni kurt ha. lalo na yung teacher! if i were you, i'd take him out of that school. yun nga lang, you have to find another school for him. kasi baka naman magtaka si kurt bakit nyo sya biglang inalis sa school nya, especially if he loves going to school.

compromise lang yan and a little sacrifice. baka pwede nyong ayusin yung sched nyo para ma-accommodate yung schooling ni kurt.

goodluck!

dagdag ko pala... si caitlin din, di pa mastered ang pagsulat. ang alam lang nyang isulat on her own eh yung name nya (and take note, yung "caitlin" lang. hehehe). yung pag-color nya, i don't expect to be perfect, too. proud na proud na nga ako if konti lang ang lampas. eh a few months older lang naman pala si kurt (she turned 3 last may). look for a new school na.

naku sis! ilipat mo na. most progressive schools open enrolment sila. kahit as late as november tumatanggap pa sila. i think second mom is a good choice. meron dati sa n@w ata na nagsabi ng good review reg the school. if i were you, naku kausapin mo yng mahaderang teacher na yan. dapat hinde na sya ng preschool teacher. u dont expect a nursery to do the things a grade 1 or grade 5 can do like coloring within the lines. hello?!!! yung anak nga ng neighbor namen till now highschool na hirap pa syang magcolor na hinde lumalagpas hahaha i will give that teacher a piece of my mind. dapat ngturo sya sa college!!!! naku nagiinit ulo ko! di dapat ganyan ginagawa nila sa kids at pagnatrauma yan sila ba mahihirapan?? HINDE? tayong parents kasi hirap i-repair yung damage na na-cause nila.

hi jane,

yes. i super agree with you. ang thinking ko talaga is the school, most especially preschool is there to teach them the basic that at home, it's only supplemental. akala ko we're on the right school kasi during orientation sinabi pa na the students will only have homeworks on fridays kasi they understand that the parents are busy, etc. etc.

But even if kurt doesn't have homework on weekdays, nag-aaral pa rin kami kasi gusto nya.

And yes, what I really hated was the fact that negative ang delivery ng comments.

I am seriously considering of looking for another school.

Hi Tet,

So progressive schools pala accept students anytime, may pag-asa pa ako. Medyo matanda na kasi yung teacher ni Kurt, lola appeal na, she was effective during hubby's niece and nephew's time but I guess matanda na lang talaga sya ngayon so medyo mas maiksi na ang pasensya or it could be na yun talaga ang method nya which is totally ayoko for a preschool. ayoko maapektuhan si kurt emotionally.

Hi! I just read your post regarding your son's teacher/school. If it was my son, I would definitely transfer him to another school.

My son just turned 4 this month and it's just recently that he's mastered writing the uppercase letters although syempre di naman perfect ang letters. Ang saya ko na nga at nagsusulat siya kasi di niya talaga type magsulat. With regards to coloring, my son still doesn't color within the lines. He also doesn't like coloring so when I see his worksheets and he colored the pictures kahit lampas lampas, happy na ako.

My son is in a progressive school kasi ayaw ko talaga ng traditional school for his preschool years. I want him to enjoy school. Sa traditional school usually ang dami nang books at nursery pa lang.

I hope you find a new school for your son.
